Center of the Ukrainian Culture in Szczecin

Center of the Ukrainian Culture in Szczecin is the center of social and cultural life of the Ukrainian community of the city and the Westpomeranian region, which is inhabited with several thousands of Ukrainins who were forced to resettle in 1947 as a result of action called „Vistula”. The organized beginnings of the social and cultural life of the Ukrainian minory in Pomerania region goes back as far as 1956, when the Social and Cultural Ukrainian Society was establisehd. In 1990 that organization was converted into the Association of Ukrainians in Poland, an organizor and animator of social and cultural life of the Ukrainian community, having for its goal the development of Ukrainian identity, including the cultural, as well as the religious one. In order to accomplish that Szczecin section of AUinP has established a Center of Ukrainian Culture, which plays an essential culture generating and social role in the life of Szczecin city. The center consists of the Ukrainian language school, children and youth artistic ensembles (Dance ensemble Metelycia, Student’s theatre group) and the Ukrainian Library. During the summer the summer camps for children and youth are organized by the center. AUinP cooperates with the Pomeranian Library, as well as with the Slavic Philology Insitute at Szczecin University; and since 1997 together with the Castle of Pomeranian Princes in Szczecin it is an organizer of the Ukrainian Culture Days annually. Since 2008 the center of Open University „On the border of cultures” has been activated, hosting lectures with renown historians and culture authorities, as well as other renown representatives of humanistics disciplines. In January 2009 from the initiative of AUinP Szczecin section, the Council of National and Ethnic Minorities was established, gathering national and ethnic organizations which are active within the Szczecin municipality.
